Richard is an experienced

educational consultant

drawing upon over a decade of management experience in large outdoor centres and institutions. Richard specialises in outdoor learning, including infrastructure and grounds development, logistics, staff training and the implementation of management and compliance systems. He frequently delivers lectures and seminars at international education conferences.

Richard was previously an officer in the British Army where he commanded specialist combat engineer paratroopers on operations in conflict and post-conflict environments. He left the military to complete a PhD in Scottish Mountaineering History at the University of Aberdeen.

 

His doctorate was part-funded by the Scottish Mountaineering Trust and Donald Withrington Trust and he has research expertise in risk management in the outdoors, and specific studies of the cultural and social effects of extreme sports.

Richard is an endurance athlete (running & cycling) with palmares that include: British Army and Combined Service X-Country Champion, multi-podium international mountain marathoner (sponsored by Montane Clothing), and accomplished multi-podium cycle 24hr endurance racer including events such as the Strathpuffer 24hr and 200km Dirty Reiver. He is also an experienced adventure cyclist and mountain biker and has ridden and coached in Norway, France, Germany and Spain including two self-supported journeys across Scotland.
